By the middle of year 10 many students start questioning “why” they are studying the subjects on their timetable, they are beginning to create a sense of direction and they need to know they are benefiting from their education.
“Senior students are able to set clear goals and identify clear pathways to achieve them.”
Considering the following statistics from 2014:
- 47% of all graduating year 12 students came from a non-OP pathway.
- Only 40% of graduating year 12 students went on to university course.
- 12% of these students did not come from an OP pathway.
- Of these only 73% will graduate that course.
- Only 28% of Students will use an OP to enter University
Breaking down what vocational education means to the college, is primarily acknowledged in the distinction between vocational education and vocational education & training (VET).
The needs of the stakeholders – students, parents, staff, community and BCE. As part of a professional Christian community there is an identified need to provide access, justice and equity in education.
Finally, consultation and recognition of the clear positional and procedural requirements in order to develop and implement an Operating Plan for the MMC VET Department so as to build a strong and significant vocational education program at MMC.
MMCVET is participating in a constantly changing political environment that impacts vocational funding on an annual basis. Further to this MMCVET must acknowledge and adapt to the changing employment marketplace. MMCVET is well equipped to create and capitalise on these changing opportunities for students at MMC.
Ways of Working
Vocational Education is where students begin to explore and understand the world of work. Students at Mt Maria College start by learning the ‘soft skills’ of employment like communicating in the workplace as well as literacy and numeracy for the workplace. Students’ progress towards developing more technical skills for their intended vocation.
Vocational Education is different from VET (Vocational Education and Training). VET courses are available for study by students as part of Senior School at Mt Maria College as part of this pathway to gain the technical skills for further training and employment.
VET in Schools courses lead to nationally recognised Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications, either certificates or statements of attainment. These courses also include work-placement. And can provide a head start towards a career and pathways to further study.
The achievement of a VET qualification signifies that a student has demonstrated competency against the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the workplace.
Due to the significant change in the methodology of learning and teaching students that undertake a Certificate qualification are inducted into VET and the ways of learning at the beginning of their course.
Vocational education and training (VET) enables students to acquire workplace skills through nationally recognised training described within an industry- developed training package or an accredited course. The achievement of a VET qualification signifies that a student has demonstrated competency against the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively in the workplace. All VET qualifications are delivered and issued by Registered Training Organisations, such as Mt Maria College (30121).

Preparing Secondary Students for Work.
Mt Maria College is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) (Provider Number: 30121). We
are legislated to train, assess, and accredit students with nationally recognised certificates up to Australian Qualification Framework level 5. The RTO Manager Mr Luke Cahill and CEO Mr Glenn McConville, are responsible for all matters pertaining to certificate access, compliance, and accreditation at Mt Maria College.
Curriculum Organisation & Offerings
Mt Maria College Mitchelton continues to offer one of the broadest course availability in Secondary Education. Students can choose from a number of internal courses at AQF level 1 through 4. As well as this Mt Maria students are also offered access to a multiplying number of external courses and School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships.

From 2016, students will be offered a Certificate I in Furnishing, students will be able to study a Certificate level 1 AQF course that will give them a nationally recognised qualification upon completion as well as 2 points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.
Year 11 & 12
Students are able to study a suite of nationally recognised certificate courses at AQF level 2 and above. Please see ‘Curriculum Organisation and Offerings’ above for courses. Students are also able to study courses from external providers as approved by the Principal and identified in the students SET Plan.
Certificate subjects require significant application in order to complete each unit. In most circumstances certificate subjects require more assessment than Authority subjects. The difference being that certificate subjects demonstrate skills and knowledge in more practical way. Therefore, students will often have excess classwork to be finished for homework. Added to this, students may be required to ‘catch up’ on their classwork if they have been attending an external course or workplace.
Students are assessed based on their ability to demonstrate ‘units of competency’ in the course. Examples of these units are listed under each course. Students are assessed a range of and variety of assessment methods which may include but are not limited to:
- oral or written questioning
- written materials
- journal logs / diary
- reports (oral or written)
- practical assessment through demonstration, simulation or role play
- supervised situations that simulate the workplace environment
- direct observation
- relevant authenticated correspondence or reports from employers.
Submission of certificate competency based assessment is the same process as all other Mt Maria College assessment. If assessment is not submitted by the due date – outlined in the subject overview, Parents will be contacted and the student will be required to attend a Friday afternoon detention. If the assessment is not subsequently completed, the student will be required to attend a meeting with the subject teacher, faculty coordinator and the students’ parents. In the case that these events occur, a students’ ability to access external courses maybe reduced or cancelled.
Certificate students are required to attend the College Exam block. Exams and/or classes for certificate subjects are scheduled into the exam block. The only difference being that these exams may be of a practical nature and assessed through direct observation by their teacher. Failure to attend a scheduled exam block assessment will result in the non-submission process above.
Students’ progress is tracked continuously through a system of pastoral care involving Teachers, House Coordinators, College Leadership, and the VET office.
Students studying external programs must submit a pathways notification form which outlines the students’ course/vocation and requires the permission/acknowledgement of the students subject Teachers, House Coordinator, Program Leader – VET and the Principal. This document and the students enrolment is reviewed each semester.
Students are tracked on a weekly basis throughout each term. If an issue with an external program arises the pastoral care team and parents are notified by the VET office.
Study Line Periods
It is the students’ responsibility to ‘catch up’ on work that may have been missed due to an external course attendance or work experience. Students are currently provided class time as part of their timetable in which to ‘catch up’ on missed work. It is the further responsibility of the student to actively engage their Teachers for work that they are going to missed before each absence.
Trade Training Centre
Mt Maria College is partnered with 4 local schools and colleges in the Brisbane North West Trade Training Centre which is located on the grounds of Mitchelton State High School Turnbull St Mitchelton. The Trade Training Centre provides students with the ability to access courses that will allow them to build trade specific technical skills.
School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT)
Entering employment as a Trainee or Apprentice is the best way for Students to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful. The majority of learning takes place ‘on the job’, students will also complete a Certificate II or III qualification through self-directed modules of assessment. Usually this assessment is managed by case manager who is employed by the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering the Certificate course. If the ‘on the job’ training takes place during school time students are given a ‘Study Line’ to catch up on work they may have missed in their other subjects.
An SAT is much like applying for any other type of employment:
· Positions are advertised – these are displayed around the school – these are applied for through a regular formal process
· Work experience can be undertaken with one or a number of employers before an SAT is found
· Students that already have part-time employment may be able to transfer into a Traineeship or Apprenticeship with their current employer.
