Mt Maria College will not be affected by strike action taking place in a small number of Catholic schools on 28 October. All classes and activities at Mt Maria College will run as normal, with full staffing. In a ballot conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission, only 37% of teachers in Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools voted in favour of strike action in support of a union claim for a pay rise greater than the 4.5% already awarded to teachers in BCE schools. A similar ballot amongst support staff in BCE schools saw a result of only 29% in favour of strike action. Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, David Hutton, said the result was a pleasing one that would ensure that the good work being done by staff in BCE schools would be able to continue without interruption to student learning. “We have shown respect for the right of employees to vote, and only 37% of the teachers and 29% of the support staff who were eligible to vote ended up supporting the union’s plan to strike,” Mr Hutton said. “I thank our staff for not sacrificing the education of our students for the sake of an unnecessary and pointless strike in these difficult financial times. “Brisbane Catholic Education is committed to affordable, improved salaries and conditions for all staff in our schools, and already this year we have given staff a 4.5% pay increase and have agreed to significant enhancement of conditions such as increased paid maternity leave, as a sign of our goodwill. “I thank our staff for the goodwill they have shown in return. “There will be no strike action in Brisbane Catholic Education schools,” Mr Hutton said.
